Busted & New Mirror

I've struggled with this corner of my living room from the start.
It's what you see when you walk into our house but an awkward little area.
A little while ago you all helped me sort out the lamp/lampshade situation.

And some of you suggested I continue looking for a mirror
that would work better than what I had before.

I found this mirror recently
and thought the lines and color would work.
Then I brought the bust down to display jewelry for my sale.
She's been sitting here ever since.
I like the way it looks, but I struggle with feeling that having a bust displayed is pretentious.

What do you think of busts in a common person's home?

I love the bust and don't think it's pretentious at all. If you add in some additonal books, maybe verically or two additonal pieces, it might ground the height of the bust to the table.

Will this throw a monkey wrench in if I tell you I like the larger mirror from the second image? The scale might also balance out the arrangement while those great black shades still tie in w/the stool. Love the necklace too!

I love the bust and I think the necklace makes it a little less serious. Its a beautiful vignette.

The bust looks great. I also agree with Notting Hill's suggestions.
I love how the necklace picks up on your purse.

Julie,
Firstly, every common person should be so fortunate to have a bust. Your bust (i mean she) needs a name and I think if she were in my home she would provide many a good giggle - just think of the accessories she can sport.
I do think it is all about proportion and the bust might be a bit too large for that table, and too small for the black lamp. Try seeing if she is happier in front of the larger mirror. I don't think she needs to be on books..maybe a mirrored top or some sort of stone on top of the table....
ok, now I shall stop...having said too much!
I bet you are glad to see all our comments and opinions.

I like the bust (not at all pretentious). But I do not like it on an entry way table. I think the larger mirror and the orchis was better with books and your other found objects. The bust could be used for jewelry in your bedroom.

I love the bust but it bothers me that the bust and both lamps are the same height. I would take the bust off the books to lower the height and lean the books up vertical beside the bust. Keep the necklace, it's fun and it's part of you. ( like having your artwork displayed) Perhaps even layer more necklaces. A great place to put color.

I think pretension comes from people rather than things. I have a pretty good idea you are not pretentious!

I think she's lovely. And your mirror could not be more perfect!

Yep - pretentious.
How do you like having a "miserable old man" as a commenter?

If you love it, then it works (she IS quite pretty)! The only thing is, I disagree with the folks that said to switch back to the smaller mirror--I loved the larger one you had leaning on the table in one of the posted photos and think the bust might be pretty cool in front of it. (how's that for a run-on sentence!!?) Oh, and your table is to die for too. :)

I like the bust, she adds a bit of fun to the mix and the fact that she's not afraid to wear a great necklace makes me smile! Go ahead and use the larger mirror, since you like the darker mirror...paint the large one. One more thing buy shorter harps for the lamps and the shade will hide the socket. Great blog...Love the dining room too!
